The US Civil War can be described as the first truly modern war. Repeating rifles, cased ammunition, rifled cannon, steam powered and iron clad ships, submarines, rail roads, air power, telegraphs and more all made their first appearance in this devastating war. The affects of science and industry did more than just change the battlefield, it changed the way governments had to look at waging war. In order to wage modern war, the entire nation's resources must be committed, making the concept of limited war obsolete.
