The great grand-daddy of all RPGs is Dungeons and Dragons. Unlike most games, where players take control of an impersonal token or command legions of faceless troops, D&D makes the game personal. Each player has a unique character they created to face the challenges of the game. The reward for good game play is the chance to improve the character so it can take on even tougher challenges the next time the game is played.

Few games can be said to have inspired a gaming genre as much as D&D, but perhaps the greatest compliment is that, despite the number of other RPGs on the market today, D&D is still the leader.
