John grew up in Kankakee, Illinois.  His educational experiences include twelve years in a Catholic school and a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Bradley University.  He was commissioned in the U.S. Army, and is a War on Terror veteran.  He currently lives in Sumter, South Carolina with his wife, three daughters, stepdaughter, and stepson.

John Holland has spent a lifetime enjoying games and books.  He started playing role playing games in high school.  He was invariably chosen to be the game master, and by the time he went to college, he was designing his own rules.  His first completed set of rules, which he called Fantasy Adventure, was a favorite with the school's chapter of the Medieval College Society.

He didn't stop designing games when he graduated, and has created a new set of rules especially for his daughters.  The Protector Chronicles are based on events that occur in these games.

For inspiration, he prefers classical material to contemporary, but there are some notable exceptions.  The single most inspirational book he has read is JRR Tolkien's Simerillion.  "If it will make me think, I will probably enjoy it," he likes to say.

Besides fantasy, John likes science fiction and military history.  His favorite game of all time is Avalon Hill's Advance Squad Leader, his favorite book is Joseph Heinlein's Starship Troopers, his favorite movie is The Matrix trilogy, and his favorite charitable organization is the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging.
